A Canoe or Raft trip on the Nahanni River is truly the adventure of a lifetime. Nahanni
National Park is one of the most spectacular Parks in the NWT, perhaps
the world. The South Nahanni River is one of North America's finest wild
streams and rushes 322 kilometer through the park. At Virginia Falls,
the river cascades down to form this continent's most spectacular undeveloped
waterfall, twice the height of Niagara Falls. Immediately
down river from the falls are eight kilometer of nearly continuous rapids
and standing waves created as the river flows through Fourth Canyon. There
are strikingly different landscapes throughout the Park. Four great canyons,
up to 1,200 metres deep, line the river. At Rabbitkettle hotsprings, warm
(20°C) water radiates outward to form an intricately terraced mound
of tufa rock, more than 27 metres high. A mountain landscape embraces
the canyons. Numerous
rapids, several hot springs and unlimited hiking opportunities are among
the other highlights of the river. The valley is dominated by geological
features so unique that Nahanni National Park was declared the first World
Heritage Site by the United Nations. History / Geography / Weather / Flora / Wildlife / Reading List 2010 trip Dates: 8 Day Nahanni Canyons Canoe or Raft Trip: Virginia Falls to Blackstone Landing
