We then move to Access # 3 which gives direct access to true wilderness areas of Algonquin Park. Here you’ll repack your clothes and personal items into a canoe waterproof backpack which we will supply for the trip.
After a short safety and paddling briefing we’ll load our canoes and paddle 3 lakes into the interior where we will set up a camp for 2 nights on a big beautiful wilderness lake where you can relax, swim, fish and explore the surrounding area. We’ll prepare for the evening campfire and perhaps go for an evening paddle to watch the sunset.
Day 2: This is our day to explore the surrounding lakes traveling with empty boats and a lunch which will make the short portages quick and easy. We’ll paddle 2 lakes deeper into the interior and perhaps even hike a wilderness portage to a cascading waterfall on the Tim River for lunch. It’s not unusual to see loons, deer and maybe even some moose on this day.
We’ll paddle back to our waiting camp usually arriving around 3 pm where we can relax, swim, fish and prepare for the evening.
Day 3: After a delicious breakfast and some great coffee we’ll pack up our camp, load our canoes and paddle back to our starting point stopping for lunch along the way and arriving around 3 pm where your canoe adventure ends.
3 Day Algonquin Park Interior East Side Access # 22 And The Barron Canyon Itinerary:
Day 1: Meet at the Algonquin Park sign-in office at the Grand Lake Achray Access Point # 22 at 9 am on the first morning of your trip.
Your canoe adventure begins at the Grand Lake Achray Access Point, a popular entry point to Algonquin Park. After a brief orientation, you will launch your canoe into Grand Lake. This large, scenic lake offers excellent views of surrounding forests and is home to a variety of wildlife, including loons and otters.
As you paddle through 3 more lakes, and short portages to arrive in the High Falls Lake area where we will set up a lakeside camp here we will spend 2 nights.
After setting up camp on one of the secluded campsites on High Falls Lake, you’ll have time to relax, fish, swim and explore the surrounding area. High Falls Lake is surrounded by rugged terrain and forest, offering a serene setting for unwinding after the first day of paddling. The lake’s calm waters are great for an evening paddle, and the surrounding natural beauty is perfect for stargazing.
Day 2: High Falls Lake → Barron Canyon → Return to High Falls Lake
On Day 2, paddle out from your campsite with just the empty boats and a lunch and make your way through High Falls Lake, heading towards Barron Canyon. The path to the canyon will take you through small, quiet bays, rivers, and past rocky outcrops, where you can spot wildlife such as beavers, loons, and perhaps even a moose.
After reaching High Falls Lake, portage to the Barron River, which leads directly to Barron Canyon. The portage trails are generally easy to navigate and offer scenic views of the surrounding forest. Once you’ve completed the portages, you’ll launch your canoe on the Barron River and begin your paddle into Barron Canyon.
Entering Barron Canyon is a thrilling experience. The towering cliffs, which rise 100 meters above the river, create a dramatic setting that is one of the most iconic features of Algonquin Park. The narrow canyon walls, carved out of the Canadian Shield, are filled with rich vegetation and wildlife. Paddle through the gorge, taking in the stunning rock formations and looking out for birds of prey and other wildlife. The river flows through this geological wonder, offering a serene yet awe-inspiring paddle. We will then return to our camp in the High Falls Lake area.
Day 3: High Falls Lake → Grand Lake Achray Access Point
On your final day, paddle back across High Falls Lake towards the portage trail that will bring you back to Grand Lake. This is a peaceful leg of the journey, offering time for reflection and appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty. As you paddle, keep an eye out for wildlife along the shores.
The short portages will take you back to Grand Lake, where you’ll complete the final leg of your trip. Paddle across Grand Lake one last time to reach the Grand Lake Achray Access Point, where your canoe adventure concludes usually between 3-4 pm.
